SINGING WELCOME?
Yes, there’s a question mark there: Singing welcome? If you’ve tried to sing welcome, you know this commitment raises certain questions: how do we sing welcome in an age of so much division? Do we truly welcome everyone? How about those we vehemently disagree with, or who don’t want to welcome others? How does power and race and wealth and gender–how do all of these things play a role in the way we sing welcome? How do we connect our songs about welcome to a culture of hospitality, so that our singing isn’t just empty words to make us feel good? And perhaps in this season of pandemic, what does it mean to sing welcome when our gatherings might still be limited?
